FOR EDUCATORS 2

YOUNG PEOPLE’S CONCERTS

School release concerts, once a mainstay of yearly school activities, are no longer scheduled because schools can ill afford the loss of time away from the school due to an extensive mandated school instruction and testing schedule. Mounting school busing costs and a decreased interest in arts education have further eroded the traditional school release concert experience. To combat the problem, the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra now visits schools with concerts once performed at its concert hall.

Benefits of the program include:

  • >Instills in young people, grades 1-8, in a familiar setting in their school an appreciation for the art form in an interactive musical program to meet core curricula standards.
  • >Overcomes the burdens schools face with scheduling school release enrichment programs.
  • >Prepares students for the concert experience and non-musical teachers with the tools to prepare classroom study plans with a study guide and audio tape provided by the Youngstown Symphony Society.

YOUNGSTOWN SYMPHONY YOUTH ORCHESTRA

Recognizing the need to fill the void left by financially strapped school systems that cannot maintain or advance music literacy education or assist students to prepare for careers in music performance or music education or sponsor orchestra ensembles — and to assist private music teachers who cannot provide ensemble performance opportunities for their students — the Youngstown Symphony Society sponsors two student music ensembles: the Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Youngstown Symphony Symphonette.

Benefits of the program include:

  • >helps students to develop self-discipline and ability to work as a group
  • >introduces students to concepts and means of using the mind
  • >teaches students ways of using creativity within a set of principles
  • >teaches students to recognize relationships among physical skills, intellectual organization , problem solving and strategic planning
  • >enhances students’ preparation for enrollment in music performance or music education university programs
  • >provides to students additional solo performance experience through the Youth Orchestra Senior Concerto Competition
  • >strengthens relationships between the professional musicians and the student musicians at side-by-side performances and sectional coaching
