THE SYMPHONY GUILD

In the mid 1950's, a group of twenty-some women, who were interested in supporting classical music, began meeting regularly at the Women's City Club on Wick Avenue. John Krueger was the director of the Youngstown Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 1957 theses ladies established the Youngstown Philharmonic Guild. Peg Womack (Mrs. C.C. "Red") was the first president followed by Nerys Powers (Mrs. Franklin B.) from 1959-1961.

During the late 1960's, the Orchestra and the Guild dropped the name Philharmonic. The organization became known as the Youngstown Symphony Guild. In 1969 a gala opening was held to inaugurate the Youngstown Symphony's new home at the historical Warner Theatre, now known as the Youngstown Symphony Center and Edward W. Powers Auditorium.
